STEPCHANGE – Supporting the young minds of Southwark

It’s been a couple of months now since we launched our STEPCHANGE initiative and so far, so good! We’ve made a couple of changes on a smaller scale which have been super beneficial – such as continuing our monthly cook off (which may or may not have encouraged a competitive team spirit), installing hand dryers in our bathrooms and raising over £170 for Alzheimer’s Society via our bake sale.

This week however, we were able to get involved with something on a more personal level.

Originally, as part of our STEPCHANGE calendar, we were keen to try and organise some form of workshop in Southwark. So when we saw the Events Academy featured on the Better Bankside website it was something that caught our interest immediately.

The Events Academy is a four week program which allows up to ten 16 – 21 year olds the chance to spend the summer working side-by-side with local businesses to gain invaluable insights into a wide range of different sectors. We got in touch and were thrilled when Better Bankside were happy to get us on board.

The workshop was with the chosen finalists who all had various skill sets and interests. We were able to introduce them to something we are all passionate about – branding and design, obvs.

From an outsiders perspective, it is easy to just assume that a brand is a logo and that’s it. But dig a little deeper and you’ll learn that a brand is so much more than that.

It was lovely to watch these young, ambitious minds learning about branding and in turn, design. The end result enabled the students to take what they had learnt and put it into practise by designing an invite to their end of project networking event – Bridging the Gap.

One of our main highlights from the workshop though, had to be the question time at the end. The students asked some really pertinent questions and for us, it was a way of getting back to the basics and remembering why we do what we do in the first place and ultimately – why we bloody love it.

Thanks again to Better Bankside – stick our name down for next year please!
