After much deliberation and reminiscing over past Christmas adventures we decided, having spent last year's riding through the London skies, this year our feet would stay firmly on the ground. So we got dressed up, jumped in a minibus and ventured to Ascot for a day at the races.

The day kicked off with secret Santa gift swapping and a dangerous decision to boycott breakfast in favour of Christmas Pudding Liqueur (well, ‘tis the season). We then set off on our merry way with minibus driver Clive through the streets of London to Ascot - sporting novelty Christmas hats, of course.

Being graced with beautiful winter sunshine was treat enough after a week of grey, so we were made up with the champagne reception and great views of the track from our cosy Private Box. Overcome with excitement about Mark’s ‘Secret Santa Selfie Stick’ we posed for some customary group selfie shots on the balcony before taking our chances on the horses. With the majority of us only pretending to know what to look out for on the race card it was no surprise that bets were mostly placed on horses with the most amusing names. So in terms of winning success, we weren’t expecting much. However, much to our surprise the odds were in our favour and found ourselves with winning slips on more than one occasion!

Once the races came to an end and we were sufficiently full of champagne, food and horse related jokes we set off to East London. Hoxton’s trendy rooftop bar, Golden Bee, with its fire pits and twinkling lights was the perfect backdrop to enjoy the crisp winter evening and sample the cocktail menu. Much amusement was found in swapping Christmas hats until it was time to move on to Hoxton Pony (only seemed right after a horse filled day) for more horsing around. The rest of the night was spent in high spirits even though not a single Christmas hat made it home.

A great way to end a successful 2014 and now that our hangovers have been nursed, we’re well and truly ready to face the New Year with plenty of determination and hard work – well, we have to stay off the ‘naughty list’ to ensure another Christmas extravaganza, don’t we!!

A special thanks to Clive, for being the most accommodating with the music requests and mid-journey pub stop off!
